Smere Tactics Artist Opening Reception

  • Herbiery Taproom 2015 Winnebago Street Madison, WI, 53704 United States (map)

Join us on August 4th for the opening reception of our August & September art installation from Sara Meredith (Smere Tactics)! Sara's artwork is on display in the taproom now through the end of September, and prints are available for sale.

Sara Meredith, an artist going by Smere Tactics, creates bold interdisciplinary artwork including small mixed media accessories, large scale painted relief cut wood panels and prints, and larger immersive art installations that invite exploration.

Curiosity drives her work, and open ended questions play an integral role in that process. Here are a few:

  • In what ways are we connected that we cannot already see or understand?

  • How can we restore balance and practice reciprocal relationships with the ecosystems in which we live?

  • How do we support and care for each other (including all the organisms we share this world with)?

To explore these questions, Sara’s creative research investigates the intersections between ecology, social justice, environmental advocacy, culture and psychology. It’s important that the resulting works create space for open exploration, curiosity, and understanding to take root. Pieces are constructed through a combination of relief cutting, printmaking, risograph printing, painting, drawing, collage, and assemblage using sustainable or repurposed media and materials.

____________

The works shown here are part of an ongoing series called “Into the Deep” which examines how deep sea exploration and discovery of bioluminescent creatures (creatures that emit their own light) corresponds to an individual's transformative states as they cope with traumatic events, or as they journey to become who they want to be.

Into the Deep also illustrates a personal journey to transform fears into something more manageable. Each piece has been created in real time as each stage of reframing and reintegration is happening which makes the work a difficult and vulnerable act.

Shown in the Herbiery Taproom are 2 original hand carved woodcuts that are painted with acrylic- one has additional layers of light reactive paint that can glow even in ambient light but please explore with the provided UV flashlight as well. Praya Dubia ( siphonophore) is a giclee composite print created from a larger mural and also has reactive paint.

This series is unfinished, leaving questions unanswered and transformations incomplete. Yet there is resolve to continue to descend, to create and to find ways to live in the dark.
